1. eSIM (Embedded SIM)

eSIM stands for Embedded SIM, a digital SIM card embedded directly into your device. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, eSIMs allow you to switch between different carriers and data plans without needing to change the physical SIM card. eSIMs are programmable and can store multiple profiles, making them convenient for travelers and people who want to manage multiple numbers or plans.

2. ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier)

The ICCID is a unique number assigned to each SIM or eSIM. It is used by mobile network operators to identify and manage the SIM or eSIM on their networks. The ICCID is typically 19 to 20 digits long and contains information about the issuing country, network, and a unique identifier for the specific SIM or eSIM.

3. Data Plan ID

The Data Plan ID is a unique identifier associated with a specific data plan or subscription on your eSIM. This ID is used to manage and activate the data plan, ensuring that the correct services are applied to your device. The Data Plan ID is crucial for distinguishing between different plans or subscriptions on the same eSIM.

4. Profile

An eSIM profile is a set of data that is downloaded and stored on your eSIM. This profile contains all the information needed to connect to a mobile network, such as your mobile number, network settings, and subscription details. Multiple profiles can be stored on a single eSIM, allowing you to switch between different carriers and plans.

5. Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP)

Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) is the process of downloading and managing eSIM profiles over the air. This technology allows you to activate a new eSIM profile or switch between profiles without needing a physical SIM card. RSP makes it easy to add or remove subscriptions, especially when traveling or changing carriers.

6. QR Code Activation

QR Code Activation is a common method for activating an eSIM. Your mobile network provider will give you a QR code that contains the necessary information to download and activate your eSIM profile. Simply scan the QR code with your device's camera to complete the activation process.

7. MNO (Mobile Network Operator)

A Mobile Network Operator (MNO) is a company that provides wireless communication services, such as mobile phone, data, and messaging services. In the context of eSIM, the MNO issues the eSIM profiles and manages the subscription services linked to those profiles.

8. MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)

An MVNO is a company that provides mobile services but does not own the wireless infrastructure. Instead, they lease network access from traditional Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). eSIM technology allows MVNOs to offer flexible plans that can be easily activated and managed without the need for a physical SIM card.

9. OTA (Over-the-Air)

Over-the-Air (OTA) refers to the method of wirelessly delivering software updates, settings, or eSIM profiles to your device. OTA updates are crucial for eSIM technology, as they allow you to download new profiles or update existing ones without needing physical access to the device.

10. Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS)

Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) is a feature in some eSIM-enabled devices that allows you to have two active SIM profiles at the same time—one physical SIM and one eSIM. This is useful for managing personal and work numbers, or for using a local SIM when traveling internationally, while still keeping your home number active.

11. LPA (Local Profile Assistant)

The Local Profile Assistant (LPA) is the software component in an eSIM-enabled device responsible for managing eSIM profiles. It handles tasks such as downloading, installing, and switching between eSIM profiles, ensuring seamless connectivity and profile management.

12. EID (eUICC Identifier)

The EID is a unique identifier for the embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC) within your device. The EID is used to manage eSIM profiles and subscriptions on the device and is crucial for identifying the eUICC during remote provisioning.

13. APN (Access Point Name)

The Access Point Name (APN) is the gateway between a mobile network and the internet. Each eSIM profile has a specific APN setting that determines how your device connects to the internet through your carrier's network. Correct APN settings are essential for data services to work properly.

14. QR Code

A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a machine-readable code that stores data. In the context of eSIMs, QR codes are often used to contain the activation details needed to download and install an eSIM profile on your device.

15. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)

The IMEI is a unique identifier for mobile devices. It is not directly related to eSIM, but it is used by network providers to identify the device on which the eSIM is installed. The IMEI is crucial for ensuring that the correct device is provisioned with the right eSIM profile.
